Last week, year 2 had a morning workshop with Linda who is Jewish. She taught us how to make challah bread for Shabbat. She showed us what Jewish people wear when they go to the Synagogue. We learnt the story ‘In the Beginning’ and we recited it. We learnt a Jewish Song.

We learnt about the rituals of the Shabbat meal;

1. Just before sunset, two candles are lit by the woman of the house.
2. The father of grandfather of the house blesses the children.
3. The father of the house pours wine (or grape juice) into a special cup, says a blessing and passes the wine around.
4. Challah bread is uncovered, cut and sprinkled with salt.
5. Everyone sits down and eats the Shabbat meal.

Finally, we took part in our own Shabbat meal as a class. We reflected afterwards that the rituals we had experienced over the day helped the Jewish community feel as if they belong.
