English Curriculum

The school uses the Read, Write Inc Phonics approach in Key Stage 1 and for spelling in Key Stage 2. Whilst we encourage the children to choose books from the library, we supplement this with the Oxford Reading Tree scheme.

In Years 4, 5 and 6, some children read books from the Phonic Book scheme, securing phonics, building vocabulary, and developing fluency and comprehension.  All children have access to year group libraries and our main library, where they choose books to read for pleasure.  They will also hear and study a range of quality texts in reading and writing lessons.

Our English Curriculum Overviews can be found below.   You will be able to see the wide range of enjoyable quality texts that drive our learning in reading and writing through each year.  From Year 1 onwards, our children's development of reading skills is also enhanced through delivery of Let's Think in English, a cognitive acceleration programme developed at King's College, London.

Please could we ask that you do not buy our curriculum books for your children to read at home during our learning.  We gradually read the texts in class, discussing ideas and making predictions, and we find that children are more engaged if the books are new to them.
