Music

We aim to give the children a range of opportunities to enjoy music and to develop their musical skills and understanding. Class music sessions include singing, playing, listening and composing, either as a whole class or in small groups. The children will have opportunities to build combinations of melody and rhythm, to perform their own compositions and to listen and respond to the work of their peers and to that of published composers from the earliest written music to the present day. They will also be encouraged to discover and appreciate music from a wide variety of styles and cultures.

In addition to class music we are able to offer group music-making activities of various kinds. Instrumental lessons are provided by visiting teachers from the Hampshire County Music Service in violin, cello, flute, clarinet, brass, guitar, saxophone, percussion, vocal and keyboard for Year 2 children onwards. These take place during the school day in small groups. As part of the 'Wider Opportunities' initiative all Year 4 children will receive instrumental tuition in three areas.

The children who play an instrument either in school or who have private tuition are invited to join the school orchestra after a few months in order to give them the experience of playing as part of a large instrumental group.
Whenever possible we participate in the local festivals within our area giving the children the opportunity to enjoy music making with children from other schools.

We also enjoy visits from other musicians featuring steel drums and gamelan.
