Maths

We plan our Maths teaching in accordance with the requirements of the National Numeracy Strategy. Much of this is taught in the daily Maths lesson, but additional opportunities for developing investigational strategies are also provided.

Mathematics provides a way of viewing and making sense of the world. It is used to analyse and communicate information and ideas and to tackle a range of practical tasks and real life problems.

We aim to enable a child to develop a positive confident attitude to mathematics, and an ability to think clearly and logically, and an understanding of mathematics through the formation of secure concepts based on:

  • Appropriate practical activities.
  • The process of enquiry and investigation.
  • Mathematical skills and knowledge and a quick recall of basic facts.
  • An ability to identify patterns and relationships in mathematics.
  • An awareness of the uses and applications of mathematics in everyday situations.
  • The ability to express ideas concisely using accurate mathematical language.
  • The ability to select and use a range of mathematical tools.
  • An enjoyment of mathematics for its own sake.

Mathematics is taught throughout the school using a range of strategies including whole-class, group and individual teaching. In KS2 the children are set by ability across the Year Group for maths lessons.

As part of the Home/School Partnership we encourage parents to be involved in their child's mathematical work and progress by taking part in the Impact Maths Homework scheme which operates throughout the school. Every fortnight a mathematical activity is sent home with the children which is intended to be completed by parents and the children together during a weekend and followed up on return to school.

Each child has an Impact Maths Diary in which parents and child give us feedback regarding the difficulty of the task, the level of interest, and any benefits derived etc.

We hope you will enjoy taking part in the scheme with your child, and that it will give you a greater insight into the way mathematics is taught in Primary Schools today.

Our 'Maths Matters' booklets explain the methods used in our maths teaching in both key stages. They can be viewed and downloaded below.
